Renderman Shader Program

This was my first attempt at learning Renderman shader programming and I have to admit it was not straight forward initially. But, since there was GLSL lectures going on in parallel at the university, I slowly got into understanding the light loops and smoothsteps of renderman and could relate between the various shader programming techniques.
As always, I wanted to put the knowledge into use and of course it was Cricket again. So, here is my breakdown of all the processes involved in creating a Cricket ball Shader. The complete SIGGRAPH style report on this project can be found here.

Houdini Digital Asset
This project involved the creation of Houdini digital Asset with at most flexibility aimed at the user to enable them to generate a CG City Model.
This city generator HDA has the ability to accept custom models designed anywhere else to be input into it to create the cities with those building models. For demonstration purposes, I have used few basic models. Apart from Houdini procedural expressions, lots of python script was written using Houdini's python interface to understand the power of Houdini and this was quite useful in understanding how a node based graphic package works. Maya Still Image
Ok, some of my attempts at understanding what it is to be like an artist.
This assignment was to create a still image with Maya on the topic of Dynamism. I had an abstract idea and came up with this image. Various processes and external acknowledgements are cited below. Modeling - EP curves, revolve were used for the table, candle and the bottle. Lens was modelled by extruding the faces of a cylinder and combining it with a scaled sphere to make its face. Paper is a basic plane with bumps applied to it along with a 2D texture. The dungeon is made of box modelling while the rusted wires, plants and flame being paint effects of Visor. Background is a 2D textured plane. |
Texturing - Waxy feel of candle is achieved through mental ray fast skin material and the wick with hair tube shader. Procedural textures were used to achieve the stylistic and realistic feel of the scene. Eyes were procedurally created using color ramps combined with a bump map on a blinn material. Colour ramps give the candle the encircling cartoony eyes. Wooden texture is applied on the table with modifications to vein colour parameters and also using a bump map. Mental ray glass material coloured green gives the bottle a realistic feel. Magnifying glass is made of mental ray chrome. The walls and the floor were bump mapped with a 2D texture.
Lighting - Light temperature of 5000K is used with varying intensities on all lights setting the mood towards the theme. A direction light to mimic the gloomy sun is placed at the top of the house. A spotlight is placed over the table to focus more light and cast shadows. Two area lights are placed one looking at the background image and one towards the window to light the scene.

Extras
I guarantee you will not regret watching these extras as well:)
Following are two other attempts in understanding a CG pipeline from concept generation to the final product. Storyboarding is the first step in conceptualizing a story visually and the following videos illustrate one of my projects on storyboarding focused on a split screen movie and the other project was used to pitch an idea as part of a group effort in another instance. Due credits to the second video goes to all the other group members as well. My role in that project involved video and sound editing and creating the Original theme and Script.
